sarah Beaverson, M4
I am a current fourth year medical student at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine. Before medical school, I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Global Health from Duke University. I have been involved with the Students Fighting Human Trafficking club at VCU since my first year of medical school. I was elected to be research chair for the organization and have been involved with several research projects for the club including research on human trafficking draining among ED providers, Sugaring relationships on VCU campus, and, most recently, the project on the impact of the Women Leading Healthy Changes (WLHC) curriculum.
I am interested in family medicine and women’s reproductive health, and passionate about racial health equity and community health. I am excited to help lead the WLHC project this year. I was inspired by the stories from the previous leaders of the WLHC curriculum as they shared stories about the profound impact working with these women had on their personal and health professional lives.
I have always been passionate about working with underserved and marginalized populations. Working with the women at the Chesterfield County Jail will provide a unique experience for me to gain insight into the population of incarcerated women – specifically the social, environmental, and educational barrier they face to attain health access and information. I am particularly interested in teaching this curriculum because the curriculum focuses on enabling women with the education and power to advocate for their health needs. We aim to provide education in an informative, sensitive manner with a focus on trauma-informed care. I am excited to learn from the women in the curriculum and confident that they will inspire me with their ideas and insight.
