Health Services Director
Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice
Mark Murphy began working with the Virginia Department of Corrections as a Rehabilitation Counselor in 1993. He earned a master’s degree from Longwood College in 1997, and began working as Psych II for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) in 1998. He left corrections to work as a Program and Clinical Director in residential treatment programs in 2003. Mark became the Mental Health Director at Sussex II State Prison in 2007. In 2011, he promoted to Health Services Administrator at Powhatan Correctional Center. He continued to work as a Health Services Administrator in various correctional facilities until 2013, when he returned to Virginia DJJ in his current role as Health Services Director. He served on the American Correctional Association (ACA) Commission on Accreditation from 2017 to 2021. Mark has spoken at national and regional conferences on topics such Medication Assisted Therapy for Adolescents, Addressing Indecent Exposure in Correctional Settings, and Interventions for ADHD. He wrote the Child Development and Adolescent Behavioral Health chapters for the ACA Behavioral Health Certification Manual and was the Curriculum Developer for ACA’s Adolescent Behavioral Health and Adolescent Suicide Prevention online courses. Mark is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider, and Certified Six Sigma Black Belt. He lives in Richmond Virginia with his wife, 2 daughters, and 2 Beagles.
