After meeting a survivor and learning about the covert nature of human trafficking, Fay founded ImPACT in 2015 to raise community awareness about this overlooked and misunderstood form of human exploitation happening across our country, across our state, and in our backyards.
In 2018, Fay was asked by a group of VCU medical students to educate them on how to recognize trafficked patients, as studies were revealing that trafficked persons were seeking medical care during their trafficking experience but unfortunately, were being "missed" by medical providers due to a lack of provider awareness and training.
Since that first training, the VCU School of Medicine has been supporting ImPACT's efforts in preparing the next generation of physicians to understand human trafficking as a growing public health issue; to recognize and respond in trauma-informed ways; and to prevent it from occurring / reoccurring.
Medical students at VCU now receive training on human trafficking during their 3rd-year OB/GYN clerkship, thanks to the passionate advocacy of Fidelma Rigby, MD. Additionally, 4th-year medical students can enroll in a Human Trafficking Elective where they engage in a variety of advocacy work like hosting ImPACT's week-long annual Medical Symposium on Human Trafficking; writing original research to add to the scant but growing body of knowledge on human trafficking; presenting their work at major medical conferences; educating the broader healthcare community; and most importantly, educating those who are most vulnerable to trafficking: justice-involved youth and adults in jails and prisons.
Fay would like to thank the many survivors who have helped ImPACT grow since 2015. Fay feels ImPACT's success hinges on survivor expertise, guidance, inspiration and wisdom, without which the work would be incomplete.
Fay lives in Richmond with her husband and a sweet canine named Falla. They have two beautiful grown children. When not involved in advocacy, Fay enjoys long quiet walks, nature, meditation, reading and watching movies at home with her husband.
