Fidelma Rigby, MD
Dr. Rigby is the Faculty Director for the Human Trafficking Elective at VCU School of Medicine. She works closely with the President of ImPACT Virginia, Fay Chelmow, and VCU Assistant Professor Cheryl Bodamer, PhD, in the development of educational material on human trafficking at the community, medical school and national levels. Dr. Rigby is the Co-Director of VCU's Annual Medical Symposium on Human Trafficking.
Dr. Rigby has been instrumental in inspiring medical student research in human trafficking awareness, clinical response and prevention. Because of her leadership, medical students have been able to present their original work at national and international conferences, including APGO -CREOG, The International Meeting on Simulation, and at The Global Conference on Human Trafficking.
In September 2020, The Journal on Human Trafficking published the original research of medical students Austin Oberlin and Rachel Shin titled, "Educating Physicians on Sex Trafficking: Who Receives Our Empathy and Whom Do We Blame?"
Dr. Rigby and her team are currently developing a curriculum on human trafficking for medical students as well as simulation-based workshops on trauma-informed communication strategies. Her goal is to share this body of work with other medical schools to improve medical student awareness and response to this horrific, prevalent, and hidden form of exploitation.
